Soldiers returning to Holmfirth after the 1914 – 18 War
During the Great War of 1914-1918 many towns and villages lost many men who gave their
lives during the conflict. We must also remember that a large number of these men returned
to their homes to find that the succeeding years were not all ‘flowing with milk and honey’.
However, their efforts did not go without recognition and a ‘Thank You’ Day was arranged in
Holmfirth for many of these men.
Peter Sandford, a member of the Society, has donated to us the papers which describe the
Holmfirth Welcome event. There is a list of some 1600 names of men invited to take part, as
well as a copy of the report included in the Holmfirth Express on 20 March 1920.
