This book is the result of seven years of research into the history of textiles in Holme Valley, which began when I realised that there were at least two generations growing up in the district with no knowledge of what the area and life was like when  all the mills were working. Woollen textiles have been responsible for shaping our corner of the West Riding over many centuries, and also of forming the characteristics of its inhabitants. Initially the production of yarn and cloth was carried on by families within their own homes, but as demand grew and machinery was introduced mills came into being, changing the pattern of work and society from domestic to industrial.

The first six chapters give a brief outline of domestic production and the gradual industrialisation that took place, also some of the problems experienced............
